Residents from Texas are fleeing the state in droves and heading to New Mexico, according to the 2022 United States Census data.
Between 2021 and 2022, more than 16,000 people moved from Texas to New Mexico, according to US Census data, making Texas the state where most people moved to The Land of
Don and Patti Crook were among the people who relocated, citing the high property taxes in Texas as one of the factors that prompted them to depart the state.
“Citizens are being priced out of their homes due to super high property taxes,” Don Crook told the Albuquerque Journal.
Texas has a real estate market tax rate of 1.63 percent – the seventh highest in the US, according to Houston’s ABC News affiliate, ABC13. Meanwhile, New Mexico’s effective real estate tax rate is 74 percent.
Texans usually have higher property taxes, although they are partially offset by the lack of a state income tax and the modest median home values.
“New Mexico just has more of that family feel to it,” Greg Brown, who moved to the state after living in Texas for 35 years, told the Albuquerque Journal. #
However, Texas still has its fair share of newcomers, leading the country in population expansion, Business Insider previously reported. Many of them are millennial renters, so property taxes may not be on their minds.
