SantaFe County has issued a warning to motorists as a northern New Mexico highway will soon be lined with thousands of people making the yearly Good Friday pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayo.
It is almost that time once again, for walkers to stroll up to El Santuario de Chimayo in northern New Mexico for their faith, healing, tradition, and to honor family.
According to the Santa Fe Fire Department, everyone should have a plan, know where they will be going, and never walk alone.
The Camino de Santiago is a route that thousands of pilgrims travel. At each of the Way Stations, there will be medical units and more patrols with 29 agencies present. Usually around 3,000 people make the journey, but the county predicted those numbers might be higher this year.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation has established orange barrels and signs along highways 76 and 503 to alert drivers. Drivers heading north should be aware of a large number of foot traffic along the road on Thursday, Friday, into the end of the weekend.
Santa Fe County said there is a new blue bus route that will begin on March 29 at 10 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m.
